GBCA Garden Party 2015
As part of World Green Building Week, the Green Building Council of Australia are hosting their annual Garden Party on Thursday, 24 September 2015 to celebrate this year's achievements in the industry. It's the green building networking event of the year.
Sydney Indesign 2015

HotHouse LAB events
In August 2015, HotHouse returns to the Powerhouse Museum with HotHouse LABs. HotHouse is offering workshops about sustainable buildings and waste with sister program of the Total Environment Centre, Smart Locale Ultimo-Pyrmont. Thanks to grant support from the City of Sydney, HotHouse LABs are FREE for organisations based or invested in the Ultimo-Pyrmont area.
Turning non-recyclable plastic into petrol
Bevan Dooley, CEO of Integrated Green Energy, shares an initiative that turns waste plastic comprising unrecyclable, mixed polymer plastics into liquid diesel and petrol. The novel in-house technology, which has been employed for the last three years, cracks and fractionates the plastics into finished liquid fuels straight off the process.
How the City of Melbourne tackled its food waste problem
The City of Melbourne recently introduced the Degraves Street Recycling Facility to deal with the issue of food waste. Prior to the recycling facility initiative, Degraves Street in Melbourne was producing 700kg of food waste a day with no levels of consistency in respects of recycling.
Italplast first certified under Recycled Products standard
Australian plastic products manufacturer Italplast is the first to be certified under GECA’s recently released Recycled Products standard. A number of products from their e range and greenR ranges have met GECA’s criteria for environmental, health and social impact.
Gyprock Sensitive now GECA certified
In a first for the Australian residential market, CSR Gyprock has recently announced the release of Gyprock Sensitive, a hypoallergenic plasterboard perfect for asthma and allergy sufferers. It’s also the first plasterboard to have both GECA certification (under the Panel Boards standard) and approval from the National Asthma Council Australia’s Sensitive Choice program.
The ISEAL Conference 2015: the who, what and how of sustainability labels
What can sustainability labels do to contribute to the wider global sustainability goals that we seek? How can standards have an influence beyond those certified under them? “A roadmap to change” was the theme for this year’s annual ISEAL Conference, held in Berlin from 20 - 22 May, and GECA’s Standards and Technical Manager, Shaila Divakarla, was there to join the discussion.

Without a background in sustainable purchasing or a solid working knowledge of the surrounding issues, it can be challenging to know what sort of criteria to include in a policy document, or which products and services meet those criteria.
DesignBUILD 2015 wrap up
DesignBUILD 2015 drew to a close on the 30th of April after another successful year. The event, which was held at the Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, drew over 7,000 attendees from the building and construction industries and showcased products from over 250 companies.
2015 Banksia Awards open for entries
The annual Banksia Awards are back in full swing and are accepting entries for 2015.
The most prestigious sustainability awards in Australia are now in their 26th year, recognising environmental excellence and sustainability across a range of categories and sectors. The Banksia Awards are run by the not-for-profit Banksia Foundation, which works with community and industry to promote positive contributions to the environment.
Green Star Rating Tools: the Old and the New
As the Green Building Council of Australia begins to streamline its systems for rating a range of different building projects, the previous ratings tools have now been relegated to ‘legacy’ status. This means new projects seeking a Green Star rating won’t be using the legacy tools, but existing projects that have already applied for certification or register before December 2015 can continue under the older tools.
