Core Environmental Criteria Tested:
|
Environmental Requirements |
Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
|
3.1 Fitness for Purpose |
Woodmark are a wholly Australian
owned and operated manufacturer of designed furniture since
1986, and supply furniture to the whole of Australia. They also
have outlets in New Zealand and Hong Kong.
GECS has reviewed evidence of
internal Fitness for Purpose including data Excel spreadsheets,
new orders, quote, technical drawings & purchase order
numbers. Quality assurance at the manufacturing site is
documented, with visual checks being undertaken at various
stages throughout the manufacturing process. This has been
confirmed during an assessment of Woodmark’s manufacturing
site by a registered GECS auditor. The manufacturing facility is
certified to ISO 9001:2000. Some products have had full
engineering studies to ensure fitness for purpose.
The products are warranted for
a period of 5 years.
GECS is confident that the
products under assessment are of a high quality and fit for
their intended purpose. |
|
3.2 Material Requirements |
There are many timber components
in the Woodmark range of products that have been awarded the
Good Environmental Choice Australia Mark. These components are:
flat plywood, timber tops, veneer boards and solid timber
(American Walnut and European Beech).
Woodmark source their plywood
from three different suppliers. Two of the suppliers are
certified PEFC. The third plywood source is certified for Forest
Stewardship and Custody of Chain. GECS has reviewed the relevant
Forest Stewardship and Chain of Custody Certificates and
determined that the materials are compliant with the
requirements of the standard.
Woodmark sources E0 Veneered
board and MDF from a supplier that is FSC certified. GECS has
reviewed a copy of the relevant Chain of Custody Certificate and
is satisfied that the material is compliant with the
requirements of the standard.
GECS has carried out a Chain of
Custody audit for the Solid Timber used by Woodmark and has
determined that the primary source of this timber is certified
under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. The European Beech
used by Woodmark for woodturning is sourced by the company from
a supplier that is PEFC certified. GECS has reviewed a copy of
the relevant Chain of Custody Certificate and is satisfied that
the material is compliant with the requirements of the standard.
GECS has reviewed delivery
dockets for all the timber products used in the manufacture of
the products under assessment. An audit of Woodmark’s
manufacturing site by GECS has confirmed these timber supplies
and other non-certified timber supply. Woodmark products
manufactured using these certified timber boards meet the
requirements of this criterion.
Woodmark have committed to
sourcing GECA certified timber products only and must ensure
this is the case through the traceability of the timber itself
during ongoing audit regimes. Any furniture or fitting products
manufactured by Woodmark not using certified timber products
will void certification and cannot be labeled as such. The
product lines that have been certified must use the above
sources only, or where changes occur advice should be provided
to GECS as such.
The Woodmark range of chairs
subject of this report, manufactured with certified timber
products outlined above, meet the requirements of this
criterion. |
|
3.2.1.3 Treatment |
Documentation has been provided
for birch plywood sourced by Woodmark. The documents show that
this plywood is fumigated with methyl bromide. Methyl Bromide is
an acceptable treatment solution.
A statement from the supplier
shows that plywood is not fumigated as it is pressed at 135°
and therefore fumigation is not necessary. Timber species that
are susceptible to Lyctus borer are treated with Permatek, which
contains Permethrin to a level of H1.
Alpine products are
manufactured in Australia and hence do not require treatment.
GECS has received a statement
from the supplier of plywood which states the plywood is
heat-treated. Further fumigation is not required.
The Woodmark products under
assessment meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.2.1.5 Air Emissions |
A formaldehyde emissions
certificate from the Engineered Wood Products Association of
Australia for the plywood sourced by Woodmark shows that the
plywood was tested on 18/1/07 and met the E0 certification
standard with an emission of 0 to 0.5 mg/Litre. This meets the
requirements of this criterion.
GECS has received emissions
test result for Radiata Exterior CD stock that Woodmark use in
the manufacture of some of the products under assessment. The
test result shows that the sample had an emission of 0.24 mg/l,
which is well within the compliance limit for this criterion.
An emission test certificate
from CETEC has been provided for the Birch Plywood supplied to
Woodmark. The test certificate shows that the sample tested has
formaldehyde emissions of 0.2 mg/m2/hour. This meets the
requirements of this criterion.
The Alpine MDF used by Woodmark
in the manufacture of the products under assessment is certified
as being E0. This E0 MDF meets the requirements of this
criterion.
The Woodmark products, the
subject of this assessment, meet the requirements this
criterion. |
|
3.2.2 Plastics 3.2.2.1 Resin
Identification Codes |
Woodmark have advised that the
only plastic used in any of the products they are seeking
certification for is a mesh that goes under the couches. The
weight of this is less than 100 g and is exempt from this
criterion. This finding was confirmed during the site
assessment.
This criterion is not
applicable to the Woodmark range of chairs subject of this
report. |
|
3.2.2.3 Polyurethane padding
requirements |
The site assessment confirmed that
Woodmark source foam products from GECA Joyce Foam and Dunlop
Foam and Cumberland Plastics.
Joyce Foam and Dunlop Foam have
both been certified by GECS as meeting GECA standards for their
products.
Cumberland Plastics have
provided a statement that their foam is water blown polyether
polyol blend that does not use CFC, HCFC, HFC, Methylene
Chloride or any metal catalysts or DiPhenylMethane DiisoCyanate.
MSDS for the foam used have been provided and these show that
the foam meets the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.2.3 Fabrics |
The products under assessment do
not contain any fabric. This has been confirmed during Site
Assessment via a review of all the various components during
manufacturing, as well as through an inspection of the finished
products seeking certification. This criterion is therefore not
applicable. However, products seeking to demonstrate GECA
compliance for individual project or GreenStar rating for the
Australian Green Building Council must be upholstered with GECA
compliant fabrics or other GEN Member certified fabrics. This
specification is dependent on the designer and hence is not
within Woodmark’s control.
This criterion is not
applicable to the Woodmark range of chairs subject of this
report. |
|
3.2.5 Adhesives |
Material Safety Data Sheets have
been received for all adhesives used and have been reviewed by
GECS. These adhesives satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard
No. 1: Adhesives, and are therefore compliant with the
requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.3 Hazardous Materials |
No products that have Chrome
finishes are included in this certification. None of the items
listed as hazardous are present in any of the products under
assessment.
MSDS have been reviewed by GECS
for the cleaning agents used in the manufacturing process of
Woodmark products covered under this assessment. Review of these
MSDSs shows that these cleaning agents meet the requirements of
this criterion.
The MSDSs for coating applied
in the manufacture of some of the products covered under this
assessment have been reviewed by GECS and meet the requirements
of this criterion.
The Woodmark products under
assessment meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.3.2 Prohibited Substances |
Following a review of all MSDS for
all chemical ingredients and materials, GECS is confident that
none of the above mentioned substances are used in the Woodmark
products under assessment.
The Woodmark products under
assessment meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.4.1 Separability |
The Woodmark products being
assessed do not contain any of the mentioned materials in the
proportions noted above. The product range under assessment can
be easily disassembled. They are mechanically fixed using cam
locks, nuts and bolts. This has been verified during site
Assessment and inspection of the finished products.
Woodmark products subject of
this report meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.4.2 Product Custodianship |
Woodmark have a policy of
accepting all end of life products for disassembly and
recycling. |
|
3.4.3 Coatings/ Treatments |
The products are not coated or
impregnated in any way that would prevent post consumer
recycling. Any treatments applied (eg, lacquer, powdercoating
etc) are applied in order to further extend the useful life of
the product.
Woodmark products subject of
this report meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.4.4 Replacement Parts |
Replacement parts are available as
part of the standard five year warranty provided with all
furniture manufactured by Woodmark. |
|
3.4.7 Packaging Requirements |
Material Safety Data Sheets have
been received for all packaging used and have been reviewed by
GECS. The packaging is compliant with the requirements of this
criterion.
The Woodmark product range,
which is the subject of this report, meet the requirements of
this criterion. |
|
3.4.8 Product Information |

maintenance instructions and recycling instructions have been
received by GECS. This information is provided to the consumer
at point of sale. GECS is confident sufficient product
information is supplied to consumers along with the products
under assessment.
The Woodmark product range,

factory is zoned for a General Industrial under Fairfield LEP
1994;
• A letter from Fairfield City showing that Woodmark were
environmentally assessed and congratulated on their assessment,
and;
• A copy of a letter stating that Woodmark has not been
prosecuted for any environmental regulation breeches with the
past two years.
The nature of the production
process indicates no significant environmental emission takes
place factors on site.
Woodmark products subject of
this report meet the requirements of this criterion. |
|
5.0 Compliance to Labour, Anti-
Discrimination and Safety Regulations |
For confirmation of compliance
with Labour, antidiscrimination and OH&S regulations, GECS
