Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
|
3.1 Fitness for
Purpose |
Kinnarps of Sweden manufactures an
extensive range of office furniture and fittings products which
are delivered across the globe from its three factories in
Sweden. Kinnarps has grown to become the third largest office
furnishing supplier in Europe employing 2200 staff with
distribution in 35 countries. The company uses extensive quality
production procedures, internal laboratories and external
laboratories to maintain a rigorous quality production program.
Kinnarps of Sweden has also attained ISO 9001:2000 (certificate
no. 178714/B), issued by Bureau Veritas valid until 5 Dec 2008
for all three primary factories. The scope of the certification
is for Design, manufacture and marketing of office furniture and
contract furniture. Kinnarps of Sweden have provided and
extensive range of external test reports confirming production
compliance to a range of European and international standards.
The nominated product ranges carry a 5 year warranty. Kinnarps
have provided a copy of the Customer warranty and guarantee
certificate. GECS is confident that the products under
assessment are of a high quality and fit for their intended
purpose. |
|
3.2 Material Requirements |
Kinnarps is FSC accredited with
chain of custody (traceability) certification Ref.:
FSC-STD-40-004, number EUR-COC-051206.valid until 7 Dec. 2010.
Kinnarps is also PEFC accredited with chain of custody
certification Ref.: PEFCC TD Annex 4 2005- 06-17, certificate
number 190031, valid until 19 May 2009. Kinnarps also procures
wood from uncertified forests through it’s own procurement
policy. This policy focuses on the effective screening of
location of forests with a clear requirement for European or
North American sources and a range of additional requirements
related to genetically modified organisms and a preference for
plantation sources. The criteria of the Kinnarps Wood
Procurement Policy largely mirror the requirements of this
criterion of the standard. GECS has received confirmation from
the Environmental Manager of Kinnarps that all wood is sourced
in compliance to this policy. A select range of individual
suppliers to Kinnarps have been investigated as part of this
assessment and individual FSC and PEFC certificates were
witnessed on site and collated and checked off-site. On the
basis of an understanding of the Kinnarps wood procurement
policy and effectively implementation, the current FSC and PEFC
certificates and a sample inspection of the diverse timber
supply line GECS is confident that the nominated product lines
comply to this criterion. |
|
3.2.1.3 Treatment |
Kinnarps of Sweden have provided a
customs import release certificate from the Australian
Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) as evidence of
compliance to this criterion. The Final release from Quarantine
form issued on 4/06/2008, shows that the imported wooden items
underwent heat treatment overseas 64g/m3/16Hrs/21ºC and have
been released from quarantine. Kinnarps has expressed that any
treatment or raw wood products in the future is to be carried
out in Sweden using similar techniques. Other products do not
need any treatment. |
|
3.2.1.5 Air Emissions |
Kinnarps of Sweden have provided a
generic public environmental declaration which states under
section 4.2 Use of formaldehyde ‘Where formaldehyde is used,
it always complies with the E1 standard’. This document has
been signed by Tomas Ekstr.m, Quality and Environmental Manager
of Kinnarps AB. After requests for specific clarification of
this statement Kinnarps of Sweden have also supplied a signed
Declaration from Tomas Ekström dated 04/08/2008 assuring that:
where formaldehyde is used, it always complies with the E1
standard. The site assessment confirmed that all timber sources
available in the product warehouse were all E1 compliant and
that all raw timbers were veneered and edged during production
demonstrating reduced emissions from these manufacturing
treatments. Kinnarps have also provided the following test
reports:
- E1 Certificate from Egger Holzerkstoffe Brilon GmbH & Co.
KG for its 40mm Chipboard 28/11/2005.
- Test certificate 259241/2 from Homanit GmbH & Co. KG for
its MDF/HDF <12mm Fiberboards 3/4/2007
- E1 Attestation from Swedspan AB for its 12-40mm particleboards
V20 26/9/2007
- Certificate no.105501 from Swedspan AB for its V20
particleboards and V313 up to 25mm. 17/5/2004 valid to
31/5/2009.
- Test report from Swedspan AB for its V20 0- 25mm and V20
25-40mm particleboard 25/2/2008
- Test report from Swedspan AB for its 22 and 28mm 4130
chipboards 17/1/2008/1/2008
- E1 Attestation from Kronospan Polska Sp for 12-25mm
Particleboards 13/6/2003
- Technical report no. 71328927 from Rauch Spanplattenwerk GmbH
for 16mm Particleboard 13/12/2007
- Test Report no. B3263A/07 from TÜV SÜD Product Service GmbH
for 16.5mm Particleboard 26/11/2007.
- Test Report Reference F5 05967 B for their Birch veneer
cupboard 2P800 TAD and laminate rollfront cupboard 2P800 TAD
dated 7/4/2005. The results of these tests (0.07mg/m3 and 0.01
mg/m3 respectively) are within the recommended
limit.(<0.12mg/m3).
- Particleboard is sourced from Byggelite at Laxå in Sweden and
is marked with the Nordic Swan Mark Certificate No. 310 005.
All raw MDF or P/Board is decorated prior to product use. The
lamination and decoration of Board with Veneers, Melamine or HPL
significantly reduces the overall formaldehyde emission profile
for the Board. Previous industry data supports that E1P/Board
after decoration and edging has an emission profile preferable
to E0 under standard test conditions. The E1 emission
performance requirement in the Kinnarps procurement policy for
P/Board and MDF is acceptable as long as the Board is decorated.
In the nominated product range, all Board is decorated as part
of the production process. These generally accepted assumptions
are further confirmed by the results of the above test F5 05967
confirming a significantly reduced emission profile close to E0
for veneered and edged E1 Board. |
|
3.2.2 Plastics 3.2.2.1 Resin
Identification Codes |
Plastic components used in the
nominated product range consist primarily of polypropylene,
polystyrene and polyamide. Kinnarps has discontinued the use of
PVC from its product range. Based on physical observation all
plastics over 100gr where it is viable to place and adequate
label are labelled according to the ISO 11469 standard to aid in
recycling. Compliance to criteria 3.2.3.1 has been confirmed
from the site assessment at the production facility |
|
3.2.2.3 Polyurethane padding
requirements |
This criterion only relates to the
nominated chair range. No foams are used in other products.
According to the latest Kinnarps EMAS audited Environmental
report signed by Henry Jarlsson CEO, in April 2008, the padding
material used in Kinnarps nominated chair range is treated with
flame retardants which contain chlorophosphate. This information
was confirmed during the site assessment and GECS has been
advised that future production of foam will be done internally
when a new foam production plant planned for January 2009 is in
operation. At this time however only the 5000 series of office
chairs nominated for certification comply with Section 3.2.3.2
of the standard. This series of office chairs is manufactured of
foams form a different supplier to the standard range. |
|
3.2.3 Fabrics |
Kinnarps has a specification of
requirements that must be met by all fabrics that it uses. The
specifications are based on the requirements of the Swan eco-labelling
scheme, together with Bra Miljö and Öko-Tex. Both the standard
fabric, Myr, and the extended-range fabric, Lava, carry the Öko-Tex
label. The standard fabric, Eco, carries the Nordic Swan Mark (licence
number: 339012) Kinnarps have agreed to supply only the above
list of EU Flower certified fabrics as part of the GECA
certified collection in Australia. Products supplied to the
Australian market that do not use the above textiles are unable
to been awarded GECA certification |
|
3.2.5 Adhesives |
Kinnarps uses melt and water-based
adhesives in the joinery and assembly phases of production.
Kinnarps does not permit the use of any substances believed to
constitute a health risk or that are included on the Swedish
Chemicals Inspectorate's list of controlled or prohibited
substances: Phthalates Alkylphenolethoxylates Halogenated
solvents Bioaccumulative preservatives The following phthalates
may be used Diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP)Diisononyl phthalate (DINP)
Material Safety Data Sheets have been received for all adhesives
used and have been reviewed by GECS. These adhesives satisfy the
requirements of GECA Standard No. 1: Adhesives, and are
therefore compliant with the requirements of this criterion. The
adhesives used in the upholstery process and the edging of board
processes by Kinnarps are compliant to the requirements of this
criterion. Uphostery is done through the use of innovative non-
adhesive solutions as well as water based adhesives in some
instances. The 5000 series chair does not use any adhesives and
uses a plastic sleave to help the uphostery process. All edging
of panel products is undertaken through hot meld adhesive
solutions compliant to this criterion and veneer and other panel
laminating is typically undertaken through the use of urea
formaldehyde glues which are assessed under the relevant air
emissions criterion and hence exempt from this particular
criterion. |
|
3.3 Hazardous Materials |
In order to establish compliance
to this criterion, GECS has reviewed MSDS for all ingredients
used in the manufacturing of the products under assessment, and
has conducted a physical inspection during the site assessment
for all of the ingredients in the products. Kinnarps have
provided MSDS for all powder coatings, lacquers and varnishes
used in the manufacture of the product lines under assessment.
No chrome is used in the nominated product range. The following
table lists the powder coatings and metal cleaners used in
Kinaarps manufacturing sites. An assessment of the chemical
composition has been based on these MSDS’s. |
|
3.3.2 Prohibited Substances |
In order to establish compliance
to this criterion, GECS has reviewed MSDS for all ingredients
used in the manufacturing of the products under assessment, and
has conducted a physical inspection during the site assessment
for all of the ingredients in the products. Further evidence in
relation to materials has been assessed against this criterion
based of Kinnarps standard material procurement policies as well
as conversations with individual departments and individual
component inspection. The audit revealed that the standard foam
comprised of various grades used for seating manufacture is
currently not compliant to the Polybrominated diphenyl ethers
and short-chained chlorinated flame retardant requirement of
this criterion. All foams used in the seating product lines are
non compliant with the exception of the 5000 seating series
range. The 5000 series is made from a different but compliant
foam product line. |
|
3.4.1 Separability |
The site assessment has confirmed
that Kinnarps product lines under assessment are compliant with
this criterion. All products are easily broken down into
component materials as required by this criterion. |
|
3.4.2 Product Custodianship |
Kinnarps in Sweden accept their
used furniture for recycling and have recycling procedures in
place for metals, plastics, wood, fabric and upholstery.
Recycled materials are also used for energy generation. All
waste from all three Kinnarps manufacturing plants are sorted at
the source. Combustible waste such as wood shavings, woodchips,
waste paper and used packaging is chipped and compressed into
brickettes to be used for energy production in Kinnarps
factories. Kinnarps have committed to delivering a formal
product custodianship policy in Australia. Kinnarps will be
utalising waste management partners to ensure suitable material
flows from returned furniture in compliance to this criterion.
The terms of the policy have been submitted to GECS for record. |
|
3.4.3 Coatings/ Treatments |
The products are not coated or
impregnated in any way that would prevent post consumer
recycling. Any treatments applied (eg, lacquer, powdercoating
etc) are applied in order to further extend the useful life of
the product. |
|
3.4.4 Replacement Parts |
Kinnarps provide replacement parts
for the product lines under assessment. GECS has received a
suitable Customer Warranty, Guarantee Certificate and
Replacement Parts Policy from Kinnarps Australia. |
|
3.4.7 Packaging Requirements |
The site inspection has confirmed
that Kinnarps complies to the requirements of Section 3.11 of
the standard. Kinnarps do not use plastics for packaging and use
blankets with hard corrugated cardboard for inlays during
loading. Packaging is re-used with subsequent transports. The
product range is imported to Australia where it is generally not
repackaged prior to delivery on-site. The products under
assessment comply with the requirements of this criterion. |
|
3.4.8 Product Information |
Kinnarps supply a wide range of
product information to the customer during the purchase process.
At the time of delivery Kinnarps have a unique trainer that they
engage to ensure that new users of the furniture know how to
properly maintain it and ensure proper functional use. As
evidence, Kinnarps have supplied assembly instructions for its
series e tables E3S Elevator table along with Product and
material fact sheets for desks, Storage, Chairs. In addition a
sample of a product swing tag has been provided as well as
demonstration of a product inspection pamphlet generally
supplied to users. Kinnarps has also provided a copy of their
product stewardship offer document that is intended for
Australian market as evidence of compliance to this criterion.
GECS is confident sufficient product information is supplied to
consumers along with the products under assessment. |
|
4.0 Compliance to Environmental
Regulations |
Kinnarps of Sweden have written a
letter of compliance to environmental legislation declaring that
Kinnarps AB has not been in violation with any environmental
laws or regulations leading to prosecution or court of law
during the past 24 months. The letter is signed by Tomas
Ekström 25/06 2008. Kinnarps have also provided an EMAS
independently audited Environmental report (2007) issued by
Bureau Veritas. The Kinnarp, Skillingaryd and J.nk.ping
factories have been registered with the EC EMAS certification
registration numbers:S-000079,S-000077 and S-000236
respectively. A review of the EMAS report as well as
identification of major environmental risks on site demonstrates
and ongoing environmental risk and licence monitoring regime for
each major facility. There has been one ongoing issue of
relevant for this criterion related to a particulate air
emission limit for the main factory associated with the burning
of biomass for energy production. GECS has received a signed
declaration from Tomas Ekström, Director of Quality and
Environment at Kinnarps AB confirming that no penalty or breach
notices have been issued to Kinnarps from the regulatory
authority Falköpings kommun for particle emissions after levels
exceeded the allowable limit. GECS is confident that Kinnarps of
Sweden is compliant with all the applicable environmental
regulations. Any excedences related to particulate emission are
currently under discussion with the local council and not
subject to a breach order. |
