Core Environmental Criteria Tested:

Environmental Requirements

Core Environmental Performance Characteristics
Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers in their intended application. Certain standards of product performance are implicit in the label.
The nominated polyurethane foam products are manufactured to meet product quality standards AS 2281 and AS 2282. The nominated Product lines have a five year warranty.
Plastics
Plastic identification codes are required upon product lines as per the criteria of the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard.
The Dunlop foam products are exempt from resin code requirements, Polyurethane and Latex dominate the foam market and are easily differentiated by recyclers.
Polurethane padding requirements
For additives, pigments and catalysts that shall not be used in production of polyurethane padding refer to the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard.
HCFC and HFC are not used as blowing agents, Dunlop Foams stopped using CFC in July 1993. Methylene Chloride (dichloromethane) is not used as a blowing agent in the nominated product range. However, it is used in other products and will be phased out shortly. Analine based amines, pigments and catalysis based on mercury, lead, cadmium, and chromium are not added to the padding material during manufacture. Organic tin catalysts are used in manufacture. Dunlop foams have a registered hazardous waste disposal agreement.
Adhesives
With the exception of Section 3.2.1.4, adhesives must be certified by the Good Environmental Choice Label, the EU Flower label, the New Zealand Environmental Choice Label or the Nordic Swan label or satisfy the requirements of GECA Standard No. 1: Adhesives.
Water based glues are used for adhesives in the nominated product lines.
Overall Loads
In order to reduce pollutant hazards in the disposal, landfill and/or incineration of end-of-life furniture, the substances listed in the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard must not be used.
No Arsenic, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Lead, Mercury Fluorine, Chlorine, Pentachlorophenol (PCP) or Tar oils (benzo(a)pyrene) are used during manufacture of the nominated products.
Chemical Additives Furniture or fittings shall not contain carcinogenic substances stipulated in the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard. There is evidence that no use is made of carcinogenic substances during manufacture of the nominated product lines.
Prohibited Substances Substances stipulated in criterion 3.3.3 of the GECA 28 - 2006 Furniture and Fittings Standard must not be used. There is evidence that no use is made of halogenated organic substances or solvents, analine based amines, phthalates DEHP, DBP, DAP or BBP, Aziridine or polyaziridines, nor is there use of pigments and additives that contain lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury or their compounds, Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, or short-chain chlorinated organic flame retardants during manufacture.
Product Custodianship
If the product is not recyclable (or separable into recyclable parts) in mainstream local recycling systems, the manufacturer shall accept their product without additional cost (excluding transportation costs) for further recycling, or have arrangements with a local recycler to accept the product, or have an established product stewardship program. Products collected under the scheme shall not be disposed of in landfill or by incineration.
The scheme is referred to in a Good Corporate Citizen policy on the Dunlop website: www.dunlopfoams.com.au The scrap foam generated through our manufacturing plants or by our customers is recycled into rebounded carpet underlay. However, an informal scheme is not sufficient to meet this criterion and Dunlop Foams has agreed to improve its scheme to be a policy of general product take-back and to communicate this revised policy to customers.
Packaging Requirements Chlorinated or halogenated plastics must not be used in product packaging. Used packaging shall be able to be recycled by local recycling systems. The site audit confirmed that the nominated products are packaged with loose and/or bubble plastic wrap and delivery dockets indicated the bulk quantities used. The MSDS from the manufacturer identified it as mixed composition, low density polyethylene with no chlorine content. The packaging is capable of being recycled by local recycling systems.
Product Information
The manufacturer must provide written information to the consumer clearly stating: 1. The intended use of the product. 2. Instructions for correct use and storage so as to maximise the product lifetime. 3. Maintenance instructions, if required. Maintenance instructions must not specify the use of any chemical or coating limited by any part of this standard. 4. Recycling instructions for the product end-of-life.
The nominated product range is a new 'green product line' by Dunlop Foams and there is a Welcome Pack to accompany the products. They are intended to be used for soft furnishings such as cushions, pillows, upholstery fill, head rests, overlays and quilting. The Welcome Pack has appropriate, written product information.
