1.
Description of the
Technology.
Ever since its set up in Sydney during 1994, by interior designer Marc Schamburg + architect Michael Alvisse, the company has been producing designer furniture made in Australia, for faster delivery, and prized for its attention to detail, comfort and eco-friendly construction ( eg eco-timbers + recycled plastics). The Australian Financial Review describes Schamburg + Alvisse's designer furniture as likely "collectibles" of the future, meaning your authentic S+A design purchase will long remain a valuable asset.
2. The Products
Izaak Range of Chairs, Molly G Range
of Chairs, Miles G Range of Chairs, Elliot G range of
Chairs, Rocopol Range of Chairs, excluding any chairs
upholstered in any fabric that is not certified by
either GECA, EU Flower or Nordic Swan
Core Environmental Criteria Tested:
|
Environmental Requirements |
Core Environmental Performance Characteristics |
3.1 Fitness for Purpose
Certified products should be good performers in their
intended application. It is implied that certain standards of
product performance are implicit in the label. |
The Schamburg + Alvisse range of
chairs are a fully welded steel sub-frame, with the major
components comprised of polypropylene and steel. Good
Environmental Choice Services Pty Ltd (GECS) has received an
AFRDI certificate for the Izaak chair. The chair was tested
without arms at level 6 - server commercial and with arms at
level 4 - general commercial.
Warranty terms cover defects
and faults in workmanship. An extended 5 year warranty is
available on the complete range of Schamburg + Alvisse products
being considered for certification by Good Environmental Choice
Australia. However, the current standard warranty is 12 months.
It is a requirement of the Furniture and Fittings Standard that
a 5 year warranty be provided on certified products. Schamburg +
Alvisse have expressed a willingness to provide a standard
warranty term of 5 years with a discounted 12 month warranty
period as optional. Schamburg + Alvisse will need to implement
this new policy in accordance with the requirements of this
criterion, and GECA is confident that Schamburg + Alvisse have
the capacity to do so. The Schamburg + Alvisse chairs are fit
for their intended purpose.
Only the 5 year warranty
product is compliant with the requirements of this criterion.
Chairs delivered to the market with a shorter warranty term are
not compliant to this criterion and are therefore not GECA
certified, and any advice by Schamburg + Alvisse must be
specific in this regard. |
3.2.1.1 Controversial Sources
Wood and other natural materials from sources that are not
certified under a recognised certification scheme (e.g. FSC or
AFS) as being sustainably managed shall not originate from
illegal harvesting, genetically modified organisms, or
uncertified high conservation value communities |
All timber is sourced from
eco-friendly certified forests. |
3.2.1.2 Treatment
Wood and natural materials used in furniture and fittings
products may not be treated with fungicides and insecticides
that are classified due to their hazardous nature by the World
Health Organisation as type 1a and Type 1b for storage and/or
transportation. Refer http://
www.who.int/ whopes/ recommendations/ en/ |
There is no treatment of the
plywood by Australian customs. The plywood is sourced from
Europe by a manufacturer already known to GECA and previous
confirmation of fumigations have demonstrated compliance to this
criterion. |
|
3.2.1.3 Air Emissions
Products made from wood and other natural products that contain
formaldehyde based additives, shall be subject to the following
air emission limits for formaldehyde as measured using the Air
Chamber, Desiccator or Perforator test methods. Raw timber and
natural materials are exempt from this criterion. For individual
components such as chipboard or MDF panels the panels shall be
subject to the following limits as using the Australian Standard
- AS 1859 : Part 1 Particle Board /Part 2 MDF at levels
describes as EO - 1mg/litre using the Dessicator method. |
Schamburg and Alvisse products are
tested by Cetec for volatile organic compound emission. Products
containing Recopol recycled resin have been tested and have an
emission rate of <0.02 mg/Mē/hr (7 days) |
3.2.1.4 Salvaged &
Reclaimed Timbers
Salvaged or reclaimed timbers may be used in certified
furniture and fittings. Salvaged and reclaimed timbers include
timbers legally sourced as pre-cut waste timber or deadwood from
cityscape, urban and rural gardens, demolition sites, and waste
wood from certified tree loppers / doctors.
Salvaged and reclaimed timbers
must be certified by the EU Flower label or the Nordic Swan
label or, once released, satisfy the requirements of the GECA
Standard No - : Salvaged and Reclaimed Timbers. |
There are no salvage or Reclaimed
timbers in the Schamburg + Alvisse products under assessment. |
3.2.2.1 Resin Identification
Codes
To be licensed to carry the Label, appropriate
plastics resin identification code promulgated by the Plastics
and Chemical Industry Association must be marked on each
individual recycled plastic products or components weighing
greater than 100g. |
The majority of components for the
Izaak chair are steel reinforced Polypropylene. The Recopol
chair shells are manufactured from recycled ABS. The Molly G,
Miles G and Elliot G chairs do not contain any plastic
components larger than 100 grams. All the plastic components on
the Izaak and Recopol chairs weighing greater than 100g are
affixed with the appropriate resin codes. This has been verified
during a site assessment of the assembly plant. |
3.2.4 Fabrics
Fabrics must be certified by the Good Environmental Choice
Label, the EU Flower label or the Nordic Swan label or satisfy
the requirements of the GECA Standard No - 19: Textiles. |
Schamburg + Alvisse offers the

from only raw timber or natural materials are exempt from this
criterion. |

applicable to these ranges of products. The Molly G, Elliot G,
Miles G plywood chair shells have been tested and have
formaldehyde emissions within the acceptable limit. |

eco-labelled product;

items and materials. GECS is satisfied with the terms and
conditions of this policy and acknowledges that Schamburg +
Alvisse have the capacity to carry out this product
custodianship policy in full. |
|
3.4.3 Coatings/Treatments
Furniture and fittings products (or components) must not be

requirements of this criterion. |
