The Sustainable Architecture and Interiors National Tour

“How to specify and procure environmentally
preferable materials and products from a life-cycle based perspective"

This seminar series will present updated information to architects, purchasers and project managers on how to specify and procure environmental preferable building materials and products. A life cycle assessment methodology is fundamental to understanding the comparative environmental performance of building products. The most significant environmental benefits can be gained by also stepping outside the box and considering design solutions which minimize in-use environmental impact.

Specifying Green will provide you with an understanding of the following critical green specification issues:

-  The critical factors to consider for different classes of Green Products.

-   The verification process and information provided by the Good Environmental Choice  Label.

-   Education on how to ensure your green product specification actually translates into positive environmental outcomes.

“The Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) is pleased to support the Specifying Green National Tour in recognition of the significance of environmental labelling and the responsibility the profession is charged with in promoting good environmental outcomes for the benefit of society in general.

Much debate abounds in the built environment industry regarding green credentials and reliable sourcing of bona fide information.  The Good Environmental Choice (GEC) Certification Mark is an important step towards achieving positive environmental outcomes through green specifying.  The RAIA understands the important role project specifications play in leading and effecting change through influencing decision makers in the built environment industry.

Architects have the potential to lead industry through carefully considered decisions made at the design and specification stage of a project.  A GEC Certification Mark is what the industry has been seeking to provide consumers and stakeholders with assurance that sustainability is addressed at all levels of design, documentation and construction.  The building sector is currently a significant contributor to global resource consumption and it is timely that green specifying is embraced by all stakeholders for the benefit of future generations.

The RAIA believes the Specifying Green National Tour is deserving of support as it responds to urgent and current concerns for achieving a sustainable built Environment.
