A Memorandum of Understanding between the precursor to Good Environmental Choice Australia (GECA) Ltd and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) was signed on the 5th of October 2005. This agreement is currently being reviewed in the context of the recent GECA restructure.

The purpose of this agreement was to present to the market a consistent and accurate signal to the building and construction sectors as to the real environmental requirements for Greener buildings in Australia. The organizations seek to collaborate to promote greener building products and projects and give enhanced market reward for environmental innovation.

GECA and GBCA share the same mission of promoting sustainable consumption and an understanding in the importance of providing the market a consistent message and framework for environmental assessment of both building products and buildings through each others respective rating tools. The collaboration compliments each organisations work by ensuring consistency between both the Green Buildings Councils Green Star rating tool and the GECA Good Environmental Choice Label for building products.

The Green Building Council of Australia

The Key Objectives of the Green Buildings Council are:

  1. To drive the transition of the Australian property industry towards sustainability by promoting green building programs, technologies, design practices and operations;
  2. To encourage the integration of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings.

In order to achieve these objectives, the Green Building Council of Australia launched the Green Star environmental rating system for buildings in Australia.
